DESCRIPTION


A house has stood at Shieldhill on its present site overlooking the Clyde Valley and Lanarkshire hills, for over 800 years. It originally dates back to 1199, and parts of the original remain, but it is the 18th and 19th Century additions to the main property that predominate. The house has been occupied since 1560, mainly by the Chancellor family who it was that sold the property in 1959. It was then that Shieldhill metamorphosed into hotel use. More recently, Shieldhill hosted Nelson Mandela in October 1997 when he visited Scotland for the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting. A tree was planted in the grounds to commemorate his visit.

Whilst Shieldhill Castle is the central “core” to the hotel – in which 16 bedrooms and all of the public areas are located – the addition, over 10 years ago, of the stable block annexe (providing 10 bedrooms), the 2 timber lodges (4 bedrooms) and the fixed marquee to the rear, gives Shieldhill Castle the added and useful range of facilities to cater to all.

Accessibility for any business is “key” and for country house hotels the air of tranquillity an added quality. The quaintly named Quothquan is an hamlet some 4 miles north of Biggar in the rolling rural countryside of Lanarkshire – Peeblesshire and the Lothians are to the east and there is a “glimpse” of the busy and commercial central belt to the north. In terms of accessibility, both Edinburgh and Glasgow are within an hour’s drive whilst the M74 at Abington junction is only 20 minutes. Shieldhill is, therefore, an ideal spot for tourists and business people who spend time in passing north or south and is a convenient spot for city concerns seeking easily accessible peace and comfort. The relaxed and secluded location is also ideal for exclusive use events, whether they be weddings or conferences.

Whilst Shieldhill Castle is indeed your quintessential Scottish country house hotel, in more recent years it has operated principally concentrating as a wedding venue. In recent years, the property and business was leased to a tenant operator who ceased operating in early 2019. The hotel has remained closed since, ceasing trading on the exit of the then-tenant.
